Sediment buildup, corroded anode rods, and fittings that have outlasted their expected service life show up regularly in Inyo County water heater repairs once a contractor opens the unit. Half the homes in Inyo County, California were built in 1975 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That depth of age in the housing stock means the water heaters running in a sizable share of these homes have been replaced at least once, and the replacements have been living with the same mineral-heavy water and fluctuating supply pressure ever since. A contractor pulling a tank here checks the relief valve, the dip tube, and the connections before writing any scope, because the visible symptom is rarely the only one.

The Parts of a Water Heater a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with furniture, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a central cylindrical water heater connected to pipes and a flue running through the roof.

The tank is what most homeowners see first, a large insulated vessel that sits in a utility room, garage, or closet and holds a supply of heated water ready for use. Bolted to the tank are the heating elements or burner assembly, depending on whether the unit runs on electricity or gas, and these are where a contractor looks when the water runs cold or fails to heat at all.

The pressure relief valve mounts on the side of the tank and opens automatically if pressure inside builds too high. The anode rod hangs inside the tank and slows corrosion of the tank walls. The dip tube carries incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank, and the outlet pipe draws hot water from the top out to the rest of the house.

The drawing shows a typical water heater layout, and a licensed contractor determines which parts apply to the specific unit and conditions in your home.
